About Fundamental Management

Experience that turns business challenges into practical action.

Fundamental Management was built on a simple belief: better business performance rarely comes from adding more complexity. It comes from understanding what is really happening, identifying what matters most and getting the fundamentals right.

I help businesses and their leaders do exactly that.

From commercial performance and operations to customer experience, people and leadership, the focus is on understanding the root cause of a problem, defining what better looks like and turning that thinking into practical, measurable action.

“Ben demonstrates a strong capacity to soak up short term pressure in order to be able to strive towards an end goal and has consistently demonstrated strong leadership skills.”

Ben Hudson CMgr FCMI FIoL

Founder & Business Management Consultant

I have spent more than two decades managing businesses, teams and multi-site operations, with responsibility spanning commercial performance, operations, customer experience, cost management, people and organisational change.

My career has included leading large national retail operations, working with major global brands, delivering growth and turnaround, redesigning operating models, implementing new systems, restructuring organisations and developing managers and leadership teams.

That experience has been built in environments where strategy ultimately has to work in the real world — with customers, colleagues, budgets, targets and competing priorities.

It has shaped the way I now work with clients.

I am interested not simply in what a business wants to achieve, but in understanding how it is going to achieve it.

“Ben’s ability to balance the needs of the client with his passion for the colleagues, was magnificent to witness first-hand. An incredible work ethic and dedication to strategically planning for outcomes...”

Colin Burns - Founder, ColBur Limited

The fundamentals matter.

Most business problems are rarely caused by one thing.

Commercial performance can be affected by the operating model. Customer experience can be affected by colleague capability. Productivity can be affected by processes, systems, leadership, structure or simply unclear expectations.

That is why I don't begin with a predetermined solution.

I begin with reality.

What is happening?
Why is it happening?
What can be controlled?
What is getting in the way?
What could realistically be achieved?

From there, we can determine the right priorities, develop the plan and make the changes that will have the greatest impact.

It is a straightforward approach, but not a simplistic one.

Experience measured in outcomes.

My career has included responsibility for national multi-site operations and teams of more than 250 colleagues.

I have delivered major operating-model and organisational changes, including work generating approximately £600,000 in annual labour savings.

I have sponsored significant workforce-management and HR technology implementation, led restructures, openings, relocations and closures, and managed improvements across commercial performance, colleague engagement and customer experience.

Most importantly, I have experienced the reality of having to balance all of those things at once.

Commercial ambition has to work alongside cost control. Customer experience has to work alongside productivity. People strategy has to produce business results.

That balance sits at the heart of Fundamental Management.

Broad business capability. Deep retail experience.

Retail is where much of my experience has been built and remains a particular area of expertise.

But the challenges I work on are not uniquely retail challenges.

Understanding performance. Building an effective operating model. Controlling cost. Developing capable managers. Creating accountability. Improving the customer experience. Leading change. Turning strategy into execution.

These are business-management challenges.

Fundamental Management therefore works with businesses and leaders wherever that experience can add value, while bringing particularly deep knowledge of multi-site, customer-facing and people-intensive operations.

How I work

Diagnose before prescribing.

Before recommending change, I want to understand the reality of the business. Symptoms and root causes are rarely the same thing.

Make complexity useful.

Businesses can generate enormous amounts of information, activity and competing priorities. My role is often to simplify that complexity and focus attention on the things that genuinely influence performance.

Practical over theoretical.

Good theory has its place, but recommendations have to survive contact with the real operation. The objective is action that can actually be implemented and sustained.

Build capability, not dependency.

Whether I am consulting, coaching or mentoring, the objective is not to make a client dependent on Fundamental Management. It is to leave the business and its people better equipped to perform without me.

“Adept at balancing the requirements of major Global Brands with commercial, system and people realities across the UK.”

Alex Fletcher - Head of Commercial, Partner Retail Services Limited

Professional standards

I am a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and a Fellow of The Institute of Leadership.

Those professional distinctions provide independent recognition of management and leadership experience, professional practice and continued development.

They matter to me — but they are not a substitute for results.

The value I bring comes from combining that professional standard with extensive practical experience of running businesses, leading people and delivering change.

Start with the challenge.

You don't need to know which service you need before getting in touch.

If you have a performance challenge, an opportunity you are struggling to unlock, a change that needs delivering, a leadership issue or simply want an experienced external perspective, we can start there.

A 30-minute discovery session is an opportunity to discuss what is happening, what you are trying to achieve and whether Fundamental Management can help.
